The U.S. imposition of high tariffs on other countries results in a lose-lose outcome. Nowadays, most countries and regions around the world are deeply interconnected in trade, and the U.S. approach will only inflict damage on the global economy. For many decades, the United States had long been a steadfast defender of global free trade. Ironically, however, the U.S. is now wielding a tariff “big stick” at the world, breaking down the free trade system it once helped build.<\/p>

Although the U.S. government has consistently emphasized so-called “reciprocal tariffs,” its policies do not truly reflect reciprocity. The U.S. claims that the purpose of these tariffs is to “balance” the trade deficit with a specific country. However, trade deficits are not always harmful. Take the steel trade, for example: when the U.S. imports steel from other countries, the cost is largely spent on the steel products themselves due to the relatively lower labor costs in the countries of origin. By processing this steel into higher value-added products, such as cars or other high-value goods, the U.S. can fully reap the benefits of global free trade.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Before making major decisions, governments should conduct thorough research and analysis, but the U.S. has clearly failed to do so. U.S. government representatives have made entirely contradictory statements on tariff issues. The U.S. government has explicitly stated that raising tariffs is both to increase government revenue and to “encourage” the return of manufacturing to the U.S. However, logically speaking, these two goals are contradictory for most businesses. In the long run, a company will either move its production lines to the U.S. or export its products to the U.S. and pay high tariffs. The U.S. government\u2019s attempt to “kill two birds with one stone” is nothing more than an illusion.<\/p>

Enlightened individuals in the U.S. should recognize the dangers of such policies. It is hoped that all sectors of American society can unite to oppose tariff policies with clearer positions and more definite attitudes. One of the major issues facing the U.S. economy in recent years is inflation, and tariffs will exacerbate this problem, a concern shared by the American public. Imposing additional tariffs is not a policy that serves the people responsibly and will provoke broader opposition.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
