According to the 53rd Statistical Report on the State of China’s Internet Development, released today by the China Internet Network Information Centre (CNNIC), the scale of online shopping users in China amounted to 915 million as of December 2023, representing an increase of 69.67 million compared to December 2022 and 83.8 per cent of the total netizens.
The report reveals that by December 2023, the number of internet users in China reached 1.092 billion, increasing by 24.8 million compared to December 2022, with an internet penetration rate of 77.5%. These data indicate steady growth in China’s economy, with the internet playing a crucial role in promoting new industrialisation, developing new forms of productivity and driving economic and social development.
Li Mingtao, senior e-commerce expert at the China International E-Commerce Research Centre, highlighted the importance of online consumption as a fundamental form of digital economy, noting its role in stable growth and promoting consumption.
In 2023, online retail sales in China reached 15.4 trillion yuan, leading the world for 11 consecutive years. Online retail sales of physical goods increased by 8.4% year-on-year, with an accelerated growth rate of 2.2 percentage points. The proportion of total retail sales of consumer goods accounted for 27.6 per cent, increasing by 0.4 percentage points from a year earlier.
The Report also highlights the continued emergence of new online consumption hotspots, reflecting the acceleration of overall trends and consumption improvement in China.
Analysis of this data underscores the increasingly significantrole of the Internet and e-commercein China’s economic and social landscape, while noting the importance of continuing to promote equitable and sustainable development in this area.
