CIIE 2024: Keys for international companies to enter the Chinese market

On November 5, the seventh edition of the China International Import Expo (CIIE) kicked off at the Shanghai National Exhibition Center. This event has established itself as a symbol of openness and global collaboration, and as an invaluable opportunity for foreign companies to introduce themselves to the Chinese market.

Since its first edition, China’s commitment to making the CIIE a successful annual event has been evident. This year, the show boasts record participation from 77 countries and international organizations, in addition to 3,496 exhibitors from 129 countries and regions, including 297 leading companies and members of the Fortune 500.

Cargill, one of the recurring exhibitors, has witnessed the growth of this platform: “In 2018 we showed less than 15 products; today we have more than 120,” comments Hui Li Gu, president of Cargill China. The company has signed intent agreements for more than US$11 billion in previous editions. According to Li Gu, the CIIE is a showcase that allows international companies to demonstrate their ability to adapt to the needs of the Chinese market and strengthen their ties with local partners and consumers.

This year, the CIIE has expanded the participation of local buyers, with 780 delegations attending, the highest number on record. China State Construction Engineering Corporation, for example, plans to sign strategic agreements with companies such as Hitachi and Schneider Electric, with an increase of up to 20% in purchase amounts over the previous year. Also, online shopping platforms such as Dewu have taken advantage of the event to launch new “new Chinese trend” collections, with the intention of bringing international brand products to the young Chinese consumer.

In each edition, the CIIE reflects the advancement of emerging sectors and global technological innovation. In 2019, the exhibition areas were revamped, and specialized sections on artificial intelligence and agricultural seeds were introduced in 2022. This year, for the first time, the exhibition focuses on digital economy, sustainability, life sciences and advanced technology, bringing together more than 2,500 innovative products, services and technologies.

Throughout the seven editions, the CIIE has demonstrated its positive impact on the Chinese and global economy. The publication of the Global Openness Report 2024 and the Openness Index reaffirms China’s commitment to international cooperation and inclusive development. In addition, the event has facilitated the participation of 37 of the least developed countries, promoting inclusive trade globally.

The Chinese market continues to evolve rapidly and offers unprecedented growth opportunities. The CIIE will continue as a key venue for international companies seeking to thrive in China, reaffirming the vision of a more open and connected world.
