China releases white paper on energy transition

According to the official news of Xinhua News Agency published on 29/8/2024, China’s State Council Information Office has released the White Paper entitled ‘China’s Energy Transition’, which details the country’s significant actions and achievements in this field over the past decade.

The White Paper is divided into six main sections, plus an introduction and conclusion:

According to the report (White Paper), over the past ten years, China has pushed forward reforms in energy production and consumption, improving its supply capacity under a new energy security strategy, making remarkable progress in green and low-carbon energy.

The White Paper also notes that the country’s energy intensity has declined steadily over the past decade, resulting in energy savings equivalent to 1.4 billion tons of standard coal and a 3 billion tons reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. It further notes that China has been the world’s leading investor in the energy transition.

“Based on high-quality development, China’s energy transition aims to establish a clean, low-carbon, secure and efficient energy system, thus providing a solid foundation for the country’s economic and social development, and meeting people’s growing expectations for a better quality of life”, the report stresses.

China’s green energy development has become a key driver of the global energy transition. Since 2013, the country has contributed more than 40% of the world’s new renewable energy capacity each year. By 2023, more than half of the world’s new installed capacity was in China, according to the report.

The White paper concludes that China, as an active advocate of the global energy transition, will work with the international community to boost energy cooperation, tackle climate change, promote harmony between humanity and nature, and build a cleaner and more sustainable world for all.
